PALMA DE MALLORCA, May 2 – Two-time French Open Champion Rafael Nadal defeated four-time Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (10) in an exhibition match played on a half-grass, half-clay tennis court.
Nadal entered the contest with a 72-match winning streak on clay (including the last two French Opens), while Federer owned a 48-match winning streak on grass (including the last four Wimbledon titles).
The $1.63 million court took 19 days to build, and yet still had to have the grass ripped up and re-layed the morning of the match. This led to numerous awkward bounces, however both players were able to adjust as the match went on. Each player changed shoes between games where they switched sides.
In competitive matches, Nadal is 7-3 against Federer overall, the only player with a winning record against the #1 player in the world.
