NEW YORK, June 14 – Alex Rodriguez and Hideki Matsui continued their solid hitting, each going 3 for 4, and Andy Pettitte pitched eight strong innings as the Yankees completed the four-game sweep over the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 7-1 victory.
Matsui finished with three RBI, Rodriguez two and Josh Phelps added one, as the Yankees have now won nine in a row and ten of their last eleven. Pettitte pitched eight innings, giving up four hits and one walk while striking out four.
The win brings the Yankees to within 8 games of the division leading Red Sox, who finish up their series with the Colorado Rockies tonight at Fenway Park. No more than two weeks ago the Yankees trailed by 14.5 games.
Up next for the Bombers are the cross-town rival Mets. Roger Clemens will face off against Oliver Perez tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium, followed by Tyler Clippard vs. Tom Glavine on Saturday afternoon and finally Chien-Ming Wang vs. Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez Sunday night on ESPN.
