Following yesterday’s 9th win in a row and another loss for the Red Sox, the Yankees have closed the gap in the AL East race to 7 1/2 games, 7 games better than they were two weeks ago. Boston started the season on a strong tear, but has cooled considerably lately, as the Yankees have gotten hot.
Josh Beckett was handed his first loss of the season yesterday at the hands of the Colorado Rockies, while Andy Pettitte continued his strong season (despite his 4-4 record), lowering his ERA to 2.93, good for seventh in the American League.
In addition to moving closer to first place in the AL East, the Yankees have also brought themselves within 3 1/2 games of the wild card.
Up this weekend for the Bronx Bombers are the cross-town rival Mets, while the Red Sox host Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants.
