Roger Clemens increased his career win total to 350 last night, pitching 8 innings and giving up 1 run on 2 hits. According to ESPN Research, Clemens moved ahead of Pedro Martinez for most career games (22) of pitching at least 8 innings and giving up 2 hits or less and 1 run or less. Nolan Ryan has the record with 46.
Clemens is still 161 wins shy of Cy Young’s win record, which may be the most difficult record in baseball to ever break. He is now 11 wins shy of passing Kid Nichols for seventh on the all-time list.
The Yankees did have a scare in the 5-1 victory, as Alex Rodriguez left the game after straining his hamstring tripping over Justin Morneau’s foot at first base. Rodriguez will be re-evaluated today to try to determine the severity of the injury. Miguel Cairo will likely take Rodriguez’s place in the lineup.
