ORLANDO, July 3 – Former New York Knicks superstar Patrick Ewing was hired today as an assistant coach to Stan Van Gundy for the Orlando Magic the team announced. There are several connections that bring Ewing to Orlando: while with the Knicks Ewing played under Van Gundy’s brother Jeff, in addition to finishing his playing career with the Magic.
The 11-time All-Star was an assistant coach under Jeff Van Gundy from 2004-06, and has also coached with the Washington Wizards. He previously announced that he would like to return to the Knicks in a coaching role, but current coach Isiah Thomas made no inkling that he would like to add Ewing to the staff. Instead, Ewing will move to Orlando to work with All-Star center Dwight Howard, hoping to improve on the youngsters offensive game.
The team also announced that Brendan Malone, Steve Clifford and Bob Beyer would join the staff as assistant coaches.
