Despite earlier comments that they would continue to distribute the new Air Zoom Vick V sneaker, Nike announced today that the shipment of the sneakers using Vick’s name will not be distributed to stores. The shoes and apparel that are already in stores will remain, but new items have been halted.
A statement from Nike said that the company “is concerned by the serious and highly disturbing allegations made against Michael Vick, and we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent. We do believe that Michael Vick should be afforded the same due process as any citizen; therefore, we have not terminated our relationship.”
In addition to not distributing his new sneaker, Nike has removed all video and multimedia content of Vick from its website. Vick has been a Nike client since he was drafted #1 overall by the Atlanta Falcons in 2001. Though he has struggled as a passing quarterback in his 6 seasons in the NFL, he has become one of the most dynamic players at the position, becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for 1,000, which he did last season.
Vick will be arraigned in a federal court in Richmond, Virginia on charges of sponsoring a dogfighting operation. It was initially believed that Vick would not be named in the indictment, but in the end he was one of four men to be included.
