ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that the New England Patriots have been accused of video taping New York Jets defensive coaches while they use hand signals to call plays to the field. A video camera and tape were confiscated from a Patriots employee and have been sent to the league office for review.
“We don’t have any comment,” an NFL spokesman said Monday.
This is not the first time that the Patriots have been accused of cheating in this manner. According to Mortensen, Green Bay Packers president Bob Harlan confirmed that the Patriots were accused of cheating during a game last November in Green Bay. The cameraman from that incident, who was escorted from the field after he was caught, was the same one who was found video taping coaches yesterday at Giants Stadium.
The video camera and tape will be reviewed by the NFL’s Competition Committee, who will ultimately recommend a penalty that could cost New England a future draft pick or multiple picks if the accusations turn out to be true.
The Patriots beat the Jets yesterday 38-14.
