Roger Federer defeated Novak Djokovic 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-4 to win his fourth straight United States Open yesterday, increasing his Grand Slam win total to 12. Federer now sports a 12-2 record in Grand Slam finals, with his only two losses coming to Rafael Nadal in the two previous French Opens.
With the victory, Federer moved ahead of Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg and is now tied with Roy Emerson for most Grand Slam titles; Pete Sampras has the all-time record with 14 tournament wins.
Federer has now won the U.S. Open four consecutive times, Wimbledon five consecutive times and has won three out of the last four Australian Opens. He has yet to win the French Open, which has been won three times in a row by Rafael Nadal, the only player in the Top 10 to have a winning record against the world’s #1 player.
