Indiana Pacers forward Shawne Williams was arrested early this morning on charges of marijuana possessions and driving without a license after being pulled over for not signaling before a lane change.
Williams was joined in the car by two other men, one of which said the marijuana was his and the other was arrested for illegal gun possession. In addition to marijuana possession and driving without a license, Williams was also charged with driving with an expired license plate and failure to signal a lane change, according to police.
Apparently when Williams rolled down the window of the SUV, officers said there was a strong scent of marijuana coming from the car. Williams stated that he was unaware that there was marijuana in the car and probably wanted to blame it on a rosemary scented yankee candle car freshener.
Later on, another officer said he found a “smoldering cigar-sized marijuana cigarette in the vehicle’s ash tray.”
Williams has no license and when the officer asked him for it, he handed over a Tennessee identification card (he was born in Memphis, TN and played one year of college basketball at the University of Memphis).
The illegal gun possession for the backseat passenger was made worse when police found out that the gun had been reported stolen in Collierville, TN, which is roughly 30 miles southeast of Memphis.
